This guide walks you through the configuration required to integrate Microsoft Power BI with PADS4 through Microsoft Azure. It assumes you’re familiar with Power BI administration, Azure app registrations, and the service principal authentication method.

What you’ll set up

To complete the integration, you will:
  • Register an application in Azure Active Directory and create a service principal.
  • Grant that service principal access to the Power BI workspaces you want to embed.
  • Assign a Power BI capacity to those workspaces.
  • Enter the resulting credentials into PADS4 CTRL Center.

Considerations and limitations

Review these limitations before you start — they affect what can be embedded and which users are supported. Not supported
  • My Workspace is not supported when authenticating with a service principal.
  • Users cannot sign in to the Power BI portal using a service principal.
  • Dataflows management is not supported.
  • Reports that use Row-Level Security (RLS) are not supported.
Supported scope
  • Only embedding of reports and dashboards is supported.
Requirements
  • Power BI admin rights are required to enable the service principal under Power BI Developer settings.
  • Workspaces require a Power BI capacity, which may incur additional Azure costs. Without a capacity, reports may show a warning or fail to display in the PADS4 Viewer.
  • Minimum browser versions:
    • Chrome 95
    • Firefox 94
    • Edge 120
For more background on capacities and production embedding, see the Power BI Embedded documentation.
