# Absence

> Learn how you release your assigned desk or office in PADS4 Workspace when you are away, so that colleagues can use the space.

If a desk or office is assigned to you, nobody else uses it while you are away. You can release it for the days that you are not there. For example, report your absence during holidays or leave. Colleagues can then book the space, and your organization uses its spaces better.

## How absence works

* Absence applies to a desk or office that is *assigned* to you. If you have no assigned space, you do not need to report absence.
* You report absence for one day or for a period. You can select several days at once.
* An absence appears in red in your calendar. Administrators can see it.
* While you are absent, your space is free for other people to book.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Absence is different from remote work. Remote work means that you work from another location and keep your place. See [Remote work in PADS4 Workspace](https://docs.pads4.com/modules/workspace/remote-work.md).

## Who assigns a space to a user

Your administrator assigns a desk or office to you. In a room profile, the setting **Is default assigned to user** marks spaces that are normally assigned to one person. See [Room profiles](https://docs.pads4.com/modules/workspace/workspace-admin/room-profiles.md).
